The Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, says Ghana is beginning to record positive results in the fight against unemployment, attributing the progress to the government’s coordinated job creation policies.
According to the Minister, both youth unemployment and the overall unemployment rate have declined since the current administration assumed office in 2025, reflecting the impact of ongoing employment initiatives across various sectors of the economy.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, July 9, Dr Pelpuo said addressing unemployment is not the responsibility of one ministry alone but requires a coordinated effort across government institutions.
He explained that every ministry has incorporated job creation into its programmes, contributing to the expansion of employment opportunities nationwide.
“Government performance has been very good. As you know, job creation is a multi-ministerial, sectorial issue and what we have seen is that each ministry has a component on how jobs are created and they are all up and doing and working very hard,” he said.
The Labour Minister also acknowledged the contribution of the private sector, describing businesses as key partners in government’s efforts to reduce unemployment.
According to him, private companies have shown renewed commitment to creating jobs and supporting economic growth.
“The private sector is energised to do more and we can see them committed to doing the best as they can,” he stated.
Dr Pelpuo expressed optimism that the government’s broader economic policies are creating a favourable environment for employment generation.
“Generally, I see that things are moving well and the statistics show that so far we have done so well,” he noted.
The Minister further maintained that available data indicate a decline in both youth and general unemployment compared to levels recorded before the current administration took office.
“Given the rate of unemployment before we came and the rate of unemployment now, there has been a decrease in both youth unemployment and general unemployment,” he said.
He assured Ghanaians that the government remains committed to implementing policies that will expand employment opportunities, strengthen private sector growth and create sustainable jobs across the country.
