The lawyer for embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—has commended the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for its professionalism during his client’s arrest and interrogation.
Mr. Andy Appiah-Kubi, a former Member of Parliament and lead counsel for Wontumi, disclosed in an interview with Neat FM on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, that although bail was granted on Tuesday night, the team was unable to satisfy the bail conditions in time, resulting in Wontumi spending the night in custody.
Chairman Wontumi was reportedly arrested at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service before being transferred to EOCO, where he was interrogated. Mr. Appiah-Kubi confirmed that during questioning, his client took ill and is now receiving medical care under the supervision of EOCO officials.
Dispelling rumours of mistreatment, the lawyer lauded EOCO’s Executive Director, Mr. Raymond Archer, and his team for what he called an “exceptional display of fairness and professionalism.”
“The officers at EOCO were exceptionally professional throughout the process,” he noted, insisting that contrary to speculation, Wontumi was treated with dignity.
Mr. Appiah-Kubi added that efforts to meet the bail requirements are currently underway and expressed confidence that Chairman Wontumi would regain his full freedom later today.
