Despite securing all bail requirements, including high-value property sureties submitted by Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—remains in custody due to an unexpected legal blockade.
Wontumi’s lawyer, Appiah Kubi, in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh, clarified that his client is in good health and is receiving full care while in detention, urging the public to disregard fears about his wellbeing.
“He is wholly healthy, receiving attention, and there is absolutely no cause for alarm regarding his condition,” Kubi assured.
However, the real twist in the ongoing saga lies in a legal maneuver that has temporarily derailed the release process. While EOCO officials were reportedly prepared to carry out property inspections—a critical step in enforcing the bail—Kubi disclosed that a surprise legal application, filed by an undisclosed third party, has frozen the process.
“The issue now is purely legal. I was unaware of an application that has essentially prohibited us from moving forward,” he explained, adding that the application was not initiated by his legal team.
While Kubi declined to delve into the details of the filing, he expressed optimism that the obstacle could be cleared early next week.
“We hope that by Monday, this application will be withdrawn so we can complete the bail process,” he said.
This development comes amid heightened speculation and tension within political circles, as reports emerged that EOCO had restricted visits from top NPP figures seeking to check on Wontumi. Though his lawyer dismissed concerns about his condition, the broader implications of the legal hold-up continue to stir intrigue around the case.
