President John Dramani Mahama has assured the Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya-Naa Yakubu II, that the traditional area will receive its fair share of development projects under his administration.

He gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by the Regent and his delegation to the Presidency, where he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to respecting Dagbon’s customs, traditions and traditional institutions.

President Mahama said his administration would ensure that Dagbon benefited from the development initiatives it was capable of undertaking, stressing the importance of equitable distribution of national development projects.

“As long as I remain President, Dagbon will receive its fair share of the development projects my government can undertake,” he said.

The President also urged the Regent to build on the legacy of the late Ya-Naa Abukari II by sustaining the peace and unity that had taken root in the traditional area.

He described Dagbon’s peace as a valuable achievement that required the collective responsibility of traditional leaders, families and communities to preserve.

“The peace of Dagbon is precious, and we must protect it through our words, our decisions and our treatment of one another,” he said.

President Mahama encouraged the Regent to maintain regular engagement with families and communities, resolve disagreements through dialogue and promote unity across the traditional area.

He described the late Ya-Naa as a bridge-builder whose contribution to Dagbon and Ghana should inspire continued efforts to strengthen relationships among communities.

The President also expressed his condolences to the Regent following the death of his father, noting that efforts had been made to secure medical care for the late traditional ruler, including facilitating treatment in South Africa.

He commended the Regent for his commitment to continuing his father’s work, adding that his installation reflected the prevailing peace in Dagbon.

However, he noted that the Regent’s responsibilities would require wisdom, patience, consultation and fairness in dealing with the various interests within the traditional area.

The delegation, in turn, expressed appreciation to the government for its support during the late Ya-Naa’s illness and funeral.

They also thanked President Mahama for attending the late traditional ruler’s seven-day Islamic funeral and participating in the installation of the new Regent.

President Mahama reiterated the government’s respect for traditional authorities and said they should be allowed to perform their duties with dignity.
