President John Dramani Mahama has concluded his two-day “Resetting Ghana Tour” of the Eastern Region with a visit to inspect the ongoing rehabilitation of the 32-kilometre Akosombo-Gyakiti Road in the Asuogyaman District, while assuring residents of accelerated development.
The feeder road project, being undertaken by M/S Mmanab Company Limited, began in December 2025 and is scheduled for completion in December 2027.
Addressing chiefs and residents at a durbar in Agina after touring the project site, President Mahama said communities affected by the construction of the Akosombo Dam deserved sustained development support due to the sacrifices they made for national progress.
He recalled that Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah envisioned development that would benefit all citizens, with the Akosombo Dam standing as a major symbol of that ambition.
The President noted, however, that communities displaced during the construction of the dam did not immediately enjoy access to electricity until the administration of former President Jerry John Rawlings extended power supply to those areas.
He said government remained committed to ensuring that such communities continue to benefit from critical infrastructure investments.
President Mahama acknowledged that previous road contracts in the area had failed to deliver expected results but expressed satisfaction with the current contractor’s progress and performance.
He said development in the district would go beyond roads and include other projects aimed at improving livelihoods.
According to him, the area’s Member of Parliament, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, would work with government to address major development concerns in the constituency by the end of 2028.
During the visit, schoolchildren displayed placards thanking government for ongoing educational projects in the area.
President Mahama said he had been informed that schools in Akwamu were benefiting from infrastructure support through the Ghana Education Trust Fund as part of broader efforts to improve education delivery.
The Akosombo-Gyakiti road inspection marked the final stop of the President’s regional tour, which included a sod-cutting ceremony for a multi-purpose hall and hostel at SDA College of Education, participation in the National May Day Parade in Koforidua, and the launch of a 24-hour economy market project in Asesewa.
He also commissioned the Krobo-Odumase Divisional Police Headquarters and inspected student hostel construction at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development before wrapping up the tour.
