President John Dramani Mahama has announced a crucial step in the government’s efforts to revive stalled infrastructure projects, revealing that payments to road contractors will begin this month.
The President made the disclosure during a meeting with the Council of State at the Jubilee House, noting that the initiative forms part of broader measures to accelerate economic recovery and infrastructure delivery.
He explained that the Ministry of Finance, under the leadership of Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, has made strategic budgetary allocations to clear significant arrears owed to contractors. These funds are expected to get contractors back on site and breathe new life into road and transport projects across the country that have been on hold due to delayed payments.
“The disbursements are being prioritised as a key part of our national recovery plan,” Mahama said, expressing optimism that the move will stimulate job creation, improve connectivity, and boost economic activity in affected areas.
He also assured the Council that a follow-up engagement will be held after the mid-year budget review to assess progress and deliberate on further actions needed to sustain infrastructure momentum.
The announcement comes at a time when the government is under pressure to deliver on infrastructure promises and support private sector players reeling from delayed payments.
