President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening national security through extensive retooling, infrastructure expansion, and welfare improvements for the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, and other security agencies.
Delivering the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Friday, the President highlighted that ongoing investments are aimed at enhancing operational readiness, particularly in response to emerging regional threats such as violent extremism in the Sahel.
“Government has prioritised security sector reforms, logistics enhancement and improved welfare to safeguard national stability and territorial integrity,” he stated. The initiative includes acquisition and refurbishment of critical equipment to strengthen land, air, and maritime capabilities, as well as upgrading military barracks, training facilities, and medical infrastructure.
President Mahama emphasised that border security is a top priority, with enhanced deployment and surveillance systems along Ghana’s northern frontiers to prevent infiltration and transnational crime. For internal security, the Ghana Police Service is receiving new operational vehicles, communication tools, and protective gear to improve visibility, rapid response, and public confidence.
The President also noted ongoing capacity-building and training programmes designed to professionalise security personnel while aligning operations with democratic accountability and human rights standards. Inter-agency collaboration among the Police, Armed Forces, Immigration Service, Customs Division, and intelligence agencies is being strengthened to tackle organised crime, cyber threats, and cross-border insecurity.
“A secure Ghana is indispensable to investment, job creation and sustainable development,” Mahama said, assuring that resources would continue to be strategically allocated to keep security services well-equipped, disciplined, and responsive to contemporary challenges.
