President John Dramani Mahama has reassured citizens that his administration will leverage the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) commanding majority in Parliament to strengthen democratic institutions rather than weaken them.
Addressing journalists at a media engagement, the President noted that the overwhelming numbers in the Legislature provide his government with a unique opportunity to pass critical reforms that will entrench accountability, transparency, and good governance.
“Our majority in Parliament is not a tool for abuse of power but an opportunity to deliver on the aspirations of Ghanaians,” President Mahama said.
He dismissed suggestions that the NDC’s dominance could be used to consolidate personal power or push for an extension of his mandate, stressing that his political agenda is “reform-driven and people-centred.”
According to him, Parliament’s majority will be instrumental in advancing constitutional amendments and other legislative measures needed to deepen Ghana’s democracy and secure its long-term future.
“The mandate given to me by the people of Ghana is to carry out reforms that will strengthen governance and improve the lives of citizens, not to establish a dictatorship,” he emphasized.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to democratic governance, insisting that the NDC-led administration would work within the framework of the Constitution to ensure checks and balances remain intact.
