President John Dramani Mahama is set to chair a special Cabinet meeting on Thursday, May 14, as government moves closer to taking a final decision on key constitutional reform proposals submitted by the constitutional review committee.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu disclosed that a draft position paper has already been prepared following an extensive review of the committee’s recommendations by the Attorney General and the President’s legal team.
According to him, President Mahama had earlier directed that the report be thoroughly examined to help government determine its official response to the proposed constitutional reforms.
“That process has been completed, and on Thursday, May 14, there will be a special Cabinet session chaired by the President himself to consider the draft position paper,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu said on Joy News.
He explained that the outcome of the meeting will shape government’s official stance on the recommendations, with some proposals likely to be accepted, others amended, and some rejected based on practicality and national interest.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu noted that unlike findings from a commission of inquiry, the constitutional review process requires the government to issue a position paper rather than a white paper.
He added that once Cabinet approves the document, it will be made public to allow citizens to understand government’s position on the proposals.
The government is also expected to move to the implementation phase after Cabinet’s deliberations, including the establishment of an implementation committee to oversee the next steps.
The constitutional review process is seen as a major governance reform initiative aimed at addressing long-standing concerns about Ghana’s constitutional framework.
