President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang will spearhead a groundbreaking empowerment programme aimed at supporting women, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups in Ghana.
Speaking during his 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, President Mahama emphasized that the initiative would go beyond financial assistance, focusing on capacity-building and entrepreneurship to create sustainable livelihoods.
“Mr Speaker, Her Excellency the Vice President’s empowerment programme for women and people living with disabilities will be launched this year. This initiative will provide targeted support, build capacity, and give access to finance to help beneficiaries create their own jobs,” Mahama stated.
The programme aligns with Vice President Opoku-Agyemang’s long-standing advocacy for gender equality and social inclusion. Since her historic election as Ghana’s first female Vice President, she has pledged to use her position to open doors for women and marginalized groups.
Earlier in February, she reinforced her commitment to these causes, meeting with representatives from Star Ghana Foundation to discuss key national issues, including social protection, governance, and equitable access to education and healthcare.
“There is a need for strong educational infrastructure, preventive healthcare through public awareness, and better support for volunteerism. Meaningful youth engagement is crucial in fostering national development,” she shared on her Facebook page on February 3.
With the launch of this empowerment programme, the Mahama administration is set to take concrete steps in addressing systemic barriers faced by disadvantaged groups, ensuring a more inclusive and equitable society.
