President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major government initiative to address accommodation challenges facing Ghana’s security services, revealing plans to construct new housing units through a partnership with a Singaporean construction firm.
Speaking at the Ghana Police Service end-of-year get-together (WASSA) at the Police Headquarters in Accra, the President said the government has commissioned the company to build housing for the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prison Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ghana Armed Forces. The initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) he signed during an official visit to Singapore in 2025 to establish a prefabricated building factory in Ghana.
According to President Mahama, the company has already undertaken its first major assignment—the construction of a 10,000-student hostel at the University of Ghana—and will now turn its attention to improving accommodation within security barracks under the government’s **Big Push Agenda**. He urged the various services to identify available lands in their barracks to enable rapid implementation of the housing projects.
Beyond infrastructure, the President commended the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the entire Police Service for maintaining a high level of security during the festive season. He noted that strategic deployment, intelligence-led operations, and professionalism ensured that Christmas and New Year celebrations were conducted in peace, despite increased travel and social activity. Describing security as foundational to national development, President Mahama called for sustained vigilance and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resetting the Police Service through professionalism, integrity, and the building of public trust.
