Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his performance since taking office, describing the transformation in Ghana as “like day and night” compared to the situation inherited.
Speaking after the President’s 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Friday, Mr. Ayariga noted that the government’s policies have delivered tangible benefits, including support for cocoa farmers and reduced prices for basic goods during Ramadan.
Referencing a Reuters report, he highlighted that Ghanaian cocoa farmers are paid GH₵2,587 per 64 kilograms, more than double the equivalent rates in Ivory Coast, where payments range between 980 and 1,225 cedis per 64 kilograms. He said this demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting local farmers and maintaining competitiveness in the cocoa sector.
Mr. Ayariga, also MP for Bawku Central, expressed gratitude on behalf of Ghanaian Muslims for the President’s leadership, noting that reduced prices of sugar and rice have allowed many families to observe Ramadan with greater ease.
The Majority Leader emphasised that SONA, delivered under Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, provides the platform for the President to review progress, outline policy direction, and address national challenges, while showcasing achievements across economic and social sectors.
