Real Madrid responded emphatically to their recent defeat by Real Betis, cruising past city rivals Rayo Vallecano 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu to move level on points with Barcelona at the top of La Liga.
Kylian Mbappe was at the centre of the victory, scoring twice and providing an assist as Madrid secured their fourth win in five league matches.
The France captain broke the deadlock in the 14th minute from the penalty spot after Alvaro Carreras was brought down inside the area, calmly sending goalkeeper Emil Audero the wrong way.
Mbappe turned provider just three minutes later, setting up Carreras, who made no mistake with a powerful finish to double the hosts’ advantage.
Real continued to dominate and added a third in the 35th minute when Jude Bellingham converted Vinicius Jr’s cut-back following a flowing attacking move.
Mbappe came close to adding another before the break, but his fierce effort struck the woodwork.
Rayo showed some fight after the interval and reduced the deficit through Sergio Camello early in the second half.
However, Madrid remained in control and sealed the victory deep into stoppage time when Mbappe drove a low shot into the far corner to complete his brace.
The result means Madrid have now won 14 of their last 15 home meetings with Rayo Vallecano and moved level with Barcelona on points at the summit.
Barcelona have the opportunity to restore their three-point advantage when they face Levante on Sunday at 15:15 BST.
