The Minority in Parliament has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of abandoning its earlier public commitment to the controversial anti-LGBTQ bill, describing the party’s current posture as inconsistent with its pre-election stance.
Addressing a press briefing in Accra to mark one year of the Minority’s parliamentary oversight, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin said the NDC vigorously supported the bill while in opposition, mobilising religious leaders, traditional rulers and communities across the country to campaign for its passage. According to him, that momentum has since disappeared following the party’s assumption of office.
Mr Afenyo-Markin further alleged that the government is now using parliamentary procedures to delay consideration of the bill, while simultaneously allowing elements of sexual rights education into parts of the national curriculum—an approach he described as contradictory to the NDC’s earlier public messaging. He said the developments raise questions about the government’s consistency and sincerity on the issue.
