Tensions are rising in Parliament as Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has challenged the legality of the recent arrest of Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, demanding greater transparency from the government.
At a press briefing, Afenyo-Markin accused the Minister of Interior of offering a flawed justification for the MP’s arrest, raising concerns about political interference in law enforcement.
The Minority Leader suggested that the Koforidua High Court and the National Security apparatus may have colluded to execute the arrest, applying the law selectively for political reasons.
According to the Minister’s explanation, the National Security Coordinator’s representative in the Eastern Region executed the court order and then handed over the case to the National Investigation Bureau (NIB).
However, Afenyo-Markin dismissed this account, arguing that it contradicts Ghana’s legal procedures and signals potential abuse of power.
In response, Afenyo-Markin has vowed to take action by filing an urgent question in Parliament, summoning the Minister of Interior to provide a clearer explanation of the government’s role in the arrest.
As a vocal advocate for transparency and the rule of law, the Minority Leader insists that Ghanaians deserve answers on whether due process was followed—or if the arrest was politically motivated.
His strong stance on the matter highlights growing concerns about the misuse of state institutions for political gain, putting additional pressure on the government to uphold fairness and accountability in the enforcement of laws.
