The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that no lives were lost in the aftermath of the severe rainstorm that swept through Accra on Sunday, May 18, triggering widespread flooding in parts of the capital.
Chief Disaster Control Officer, Mohammed Jafaro, disclosed that NADMO swiftly activated its emergency response teams following numerous distress calls from residents in hard-hit areas, including Adenta, Tema, and Kaneshie.
“So far, we have received many distress calls—residents in Adenta, Tema, and around Kaneshie calling for help—so that is why we have dispatched teams. But no casualty as I am talking to you now,” Jafaro said during an interview on Channel One Newsroom.
The NADMO official pointed to poor drainage systems, unchecked waste disposal, and engineering challenges as the primary causes of flooding in several affected communities.
“Most of the problems we have observed are that there is a lack of drainage in some communities, some of the areas too are filled with filth… In some of the areas also we have engineering defects,” Jafaro noted, stressing the need for long-term solutions to prevent future crises.
In a proactive move to prevent further incidents, NADMO has advised residents to avoid low-lying and flood-prone areas during heavy rainfall and to remain vigilant as the rainy season intensifies.
The organisation has also called for a coordinated approach to improve the capital’s drainage infrastructure and sanitation systems, aiming to reduce the impact of future storms on communities at risk.
