Nana Akomea, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has strongly rebuffed claims that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is attempting to distance himself from the party’s challenges as it prepares for the 2024 presidential election.
Responding to recent criticisms by Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, a former government spokesperson, Akomea emphatically stated that Dr. Bawumia had not shifted blame for the party’s struggles. Boakye-Danquah had accused Bawumia of disloyally trying to separate himself from the failures of the Akufo-Addo administration, particularly regarding the controversial Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), which led to financial distress and public protests.
“Dr. Bawumia did not shift blame, as suggested by Palgrave Boakye-Danquah,” Akomea clarified, pointing out that Bawumia had openly acknowledged the challenges facing the administration and apologized for the difficulties caused to the party’s supporters.
Akomea further emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s transparency had resonated with the grassroots, who appreciated his sincerity and commitment to tackling the party’s issues head-on. He added that rebuilding trust with the party’s base through acknowledgment of past mistakes and efforts toward unity is critical for the NPP as it looks toward the upcoming elections.
“Dr. Bawumia’s message of unity and accountability is exactly what the party needs to move forward,” Akomea concluded, calling for genuine efforts to restore confidence in the NPP ahead of December’s election.
