The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has sounded the alarm over what he describes as a calculated move by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to undermine key democratic institutions.
In a statement shared on social media, Nana B alleged that the NDC has already prepared individuals to file petitions for the removal of the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson — a move he claims will follow immediately after the suspension of the Chief Justice.
“CJ’s Suspension: The NDC has prepared people to come out with petitions for the removal of the Electoral commissioner if they succeed in removing the Chief Justice,” Nana B wrote.
His remarks come against the backdrop of mounting political tension. Several opposition parties have announced plans for mass demonstrations to protest the Chief Justice’s suspension and the dismissal of certain public sector employees.
Critics accuse the government of dangerously politicizing the judiciary, warning that the independence of the courts — a pillar of democracy — is under siege.
The growing unease among political actors signals a brewing constitutional crisis, with concerns that any further targeting of judicial or electoral bodies could erode public trust in Ghana’s democratic foundations.
For Nana B and others raising the alarm, the stakes are clear: safeguarding the integrity of democratic institutions is now a fight that demands urgent attention.
