The contest for leadership positions in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Central Region is gathering momentum, with 58 aspirants filing nominations to contest various positions in the party’s upcoming regional executive elections.
The race has attracted 46 men and 12 women, according to the Central Regional Director of Elections, Dr Daniel Nartey, who said the regional elections directorate was committed to conducting a fair and transparent process.
The elections are expected to shape the party’s regional leadership and organisational strategy as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
The position of regional chairman has attracted three aspirants, including lawyer Charles Obeng Inkoom, who has made party unity and electoral recovery the central themes of his campaign.
Mr Obeng Inkoom believes the NDC needs to strengthen its organisation in the region and rebuild its political support to improve its performance in the next general election.
He told MyNewsGh.com that the party’s fortunes in the Central Region were declining and pledged to reverse the trend if elected chairman.
“I am contesting for the Central Regional Chairmanship position to build a united party, recover the ground and mobilise even more, so that the NDC will win in 2028, and win totally,” he said.
He said his leadership would focus on bringing together members across the party’s various factions and expanding its grassroots structures.
“I am here to unite the party. The word is ‘unite’, and it means something. People are standing at the window, looking at us. We will bring people together, no matter where they are coming from,” he said.
Mr Obeng Inkoom added that he intended to build a broader branch network capable of strengthening the party’s grassroots mobilisation and countering the political messaging of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Competition across executive positions
The nominations cover 15 positions, reflecting competition for leadership roles across the party’s regional administration, communications, mobilisation and specialised groups.
The positions of vice chairman, regional secretary and regional treasurer have attracted six, three and three aspirants respectively.
Three candidates are contesting for regional organiser, while four have filed nominations for deputy regional treasurer. The deputy regional secretary position has attracted two aspirants.
In the communications wing, three candidates are contesting for regional communications officer, while five are seeking the deputy position.
The women’s wing has three aspirants for regional women’s organiser and five for deputy regional women’s organiser. The youth wing has two candidates for regional youth organiser and six for deputy regional youth organiser.
The deputy regional organiser position has attracted three aspirants, while five candidates are contesting under the Zongo Caucus.
Elections directorate assures aspirants
Dr Nartey assured all candidates that the regional elections directorate would treat them equally and administer the process transparently.
He said the party’s objective was to strengthen its structures in the Central Region and position itself for the 2028 general elections.
The outcome of the elections is expected to determine the team responsible for coordinating the NDC’s regional activities, mobilising supporters and consolidating its grassroots presence ahead of the next electoral contest.
