The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced the opening of nominations for its parliamentary primaries in the Akwatia Constituency, with a strong emphasis on promoting participation among women and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
According to a statement released by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, and dated Friday, July 25, the nomination process officially begins on July 28. In a progressive twist, the NDC has slashed the approved filing fees by 50% for female aspirants and PWDs—a gesture party insiders say reflects the NDC’s broader vision for inclusive representation.
“This decision underscores the party’s unwavering commitment to gender equity and empowering marginalised voices within our political framework,” the statement noted.
Nomination forms will be available at the party’s Eastern Regional Office and must be submitted there upon completion. Aspirants must also provide proof of payment of the filing fees into the NDC’s official account at the UMB Bank, Adabraka Branch, as the party emphasized that cheques and bankers’ drafts would not be accepted.
Notably, candidates will only receive the delegates’ list once payment verification is complete, ensuring a fair and transparent process.
The party leadership further urged all aspirants to campaign with decorum and uphold the core values of the NDC, especially during the competitive primaries phase.
The Akwatia seat, a strategic constituency in the Eastern Region, is expected to draw significant interest. With this inclusive approach to the nomination process, the NDC appears poised to set a precedent for broadening democratic participation ahead of the 2024 general elections.
