Nearly 200 Children Linked to Donor With Hidden Cancer Mutation Sparks Call for Reform Across Europe

A major cross-border investigation has uncovered deep flaws in the global sperm donation industry after a single donor carrying a dangerous cancer-causing gene mutation fathered at least 197 children across 14 countries, prompting renewed calls for international regulations.

The case—uncovered by 14 public broadcasters, including the BBC—reveals how weak oversight, inconsistent country limits, and reliance on commercial sperm banks allowed one donor’s sperm to be used far beyond permissible thresholds in several jurisdictions.

Experts say the situation represents one of the most alarming failures in donor screening and international fertility governance in recent decades.

International Gaps Allowed Wide Distribution Despite Unknown Genetic Risk

The donor, who began donating in Denmark in 2005 as a student, passed standard medical checks. However, he unknowingly carried a TP53 genetic mutation linked to Li Fraumeni syndrome, a condition that gives carriers up to a 90% lifetime risk of cancer.

Because the mutation occurred early in his development and affected only some of his sperm cells, screening systems did not detect it—highlighting what genetic specialists say is a key limitation in current donor evaluations.

The sperm was distributed to 67 clinics across Europe, leading to nearly 200 births over 17 years. Only after children began presenting with cancers did geneticists trace the cases back to the same donor.

Regulators Admit Limits Were Breached

Denmark’s European Sperm Bank, which supplied the donor’s material, acknowledged that national usage limits were exceeded in some countries. Belgium—where only six families are permitted to use a single donor—recorded 38 families and 53 children linked to him.

“There is no global law regulating donor usage,” warned Prof Allan Pacey, a leading UK reproductive biologist. “Large international sperm banks serve multiple countries at once. That’s where oversight collapses.”

Even the UK, which did not import the donor’s sperm, was affected indirectly because British women travelled abroad for treatment. The UK fertility regulator confirmed a “very small number” of families have now been notified.

Children Diagnosed With Multiple Cancers; Some Have Died

Clinicians across France, Belgium and other countries have reported dozens of cases of children carrying the mutation—many with childhood cancers, some diagnosed with two separate cancers, and several deaths already recorded.

“This mutation creates a lifelong burden,” said Prof Clare Turnbull of the Institute of Cancer Research. “Early and repeated scans, breast removal surgeries, and constant monitoring become unavoidable. It is devastating.”

Parents say they trusted clinics to ensure safety.

“It’s unacceptable that sperm with such risk was used,” said a French mother whose child has the mutation. “This will follow us forever.”

Experts Call for Global Limits and Tighter Monitoring

Fertility experts say the case underscores the need for:

  • International donor usage limits, rather than country-by-country rules

  • Better tracking of donor offspring across borders

  • Mandatory communication between sperm banks and health authorities

  • Improved genetic screening, without making donor recruitment impossible

The European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology has proposed a global cap of 50 families per donor, but critics say it still fails to address medical risks.

“This is not only about genetics,” warned Sarah Norcross of the Progress Educational Trust. “It’s about the psychological impact on donors’ offspring who may discover they have hundreds of half-siblings.”

Rare, But a Wake-Up Call

While experts stress that such cases are extremely rare, they agree that the industry’s rapid globalisation has outpaced regulation.

“This is a wake-up call,” Prof Pacey concluded. “Countries depend on large international sperm banks, yet we have no global system to prevent cases like this. That must change.”
