Nobel International Business School (NiBS) University has unveiled a $108,000 scholarship programme designed to strengthen the professional capacities of Members of Parliament and Parliamentary Service Staff. Named in honour of Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the initiative reflects a strategic collaboration between the academic institution and Parliament aimed at enhancing governance and democratic effectiveness.
Professor Kwaku Atuahene-Gima, Founder and President of NiBS University, explained that the scholarship will support 20 beneficiaries in acquiring critical skills needed for efficient parliamentary functions. He noted that applicants must have their forms endorsed by the Speaker, ensuring a close alignment with parliamentary priorities.
The programme focuses on capacity building through peer review and knowledge exchange, fostering an environment of continuous learning among MPs and staff. “This partnership could serve as a blueprint for other institutions seeking to promote capacity development and strengthen democratic governance,” Professor Atuahene-Gima remarked.
Speaker Bagbin expressed gratitude for the partnership, emphasizing the shared commitment to democracy and institutional development. “Your dedication to supporting parliamentary work is deeply appreciated, and we are keen to explore further collaboration,” he said.
Highlighting the impact of NiBS University’s programmes, Dr. Gloria Sarku Kumawu, Deputy Clerk for Information Management Services and an alumna of the university, shared her experience balancing academic pursuits with professional and personal responsibilities. She encouraged especially women to leverage the university’s practical and accredited courses to empower themselves and contribute meaningfully to national development.
As a symbol of the growing partnership, NiBS University presented Speaker Bagbin with a citation and plaque recognizing his role in advancing the scholarship and parliamentary capacity building.
This initiative represents a concerted effort to nurture skilled leadership within Ghana’s legislative framework, bridging education and governance to foster sustainable democratic progress.
