Residents of Ankobra-Sanwoma in the Ellembelle District are increasingly worried about the threat of severe flooding as persistent tidal waves continue to submerge parts of the community.
The Assembly Member for the Ankobra Electoral Area, Mr Patrick Assuah, has appealed to the government to urgently construct a sea defence wall and proper drainage systems to protect lives and property.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Ankobra in the Western Region, Mr Assuah said the situation had become unbearable, with some sections of the town regularly flooded.
He warned that if urgent action was not taken, the entire community could eventually be submerged, leading to significant destruction and possible loss of life.
When the Ghana News Agency visited the area, there was visible evidence of water overflowing from the River Ankobra as the sea surged inland.
Mr Assuah alleged that the tidal waves had worsened due to spillover effects from the sea defence project at Axim, and called for the extension of similar protective works to the shores of Ankobra.
He also appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation to raise awareness about the looming danger and push for immediate government intervention.
According to him, a sea defence wall and improved gutters would help control the flooding and reduce the risk of a major disaster in the community.
