The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised concerns over what it describes as a series of politically motivated invitations and arrests of its members by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
The party’s reaction follows the recent invitation of Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, on Saturday, February 22. The following day, former Education Minister and ex-Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, was also arrested over alleged financial irregularities at GIIF. Additionally, former Deputy Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), Kwame Ohene Djan, was detained in connection with a scandal at the NSA.
Speaking to Citi News, NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed described the development as alarming and accused the government of using state security agencies to suppress opposition voices.
“We are shocked by this development and questioning whether we are witnessing a return to the criminal libel law. Is free speech under threat, or is this an orchestrated effort to intimidate the opposition?” he asked.
Haruna Mohammed further emphasized that the NPP remains resolute and will not be silenced.
“Let me put it on record that the New Patriotic Party will not be intimidated by the government’s attempts to stifle dissent. We will continue to speak out, and we urge our members to do the same.”
The party’s statement signals growing political tensions, with the NPP accusing the government of using security agencies to target opposition figures ahead of the next election cycle.
