The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed confidence in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) ability to conduct a credible by-election in Akwatia on September 2, 2025, following the passing of the constituency’s MP, Ernest Kumi.
Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, August 20, praised the EC’s track record in organising transparent and free elections. “The processes leading to elections in Ghana have always been very open and transparent. I have no doubt that the EC will conduct a free and fair election in Akwatia,” he stated.
The by-election comes in the wake of heightened political tension after the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, which was marred by isolated clashes and assaults on journalists. In response, the EC has engaged security agencies and civil society to ensure the safety of voters, election officials, and media personnel ahead of the polls.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has intensified efforts to maintain law and order. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh-Yohuno disclosed that eight individuals have been arrested in connection with disturbances during the Ablekuma North rerun. The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court on Thursday, August 21.
“As of yesterday, we have eight suspects. They are being processed and will be brought before the court. We are making progress and will ensure justice is served to those who acted unprofessionally,” the IGP stated.
The announcements by both the NPP and the Police Service aim to reassure the public that the upcoming Akwatia by-election will be conducted safely, transparently, and in full compliance with electoral laws.
