Private legal practitioner and New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Alex Gyamfi has publicly criticized Attorney General Dominic Ayine for what he describes as a disappointing departure from the human rights values Ayine once championed as a law lecturer.
Speaking on Asaase Radio’s The Forum, Gyamfi—himself a former student of Ayine—expressed dismay at the Attorney General’s apparent silence amid a wave of controversial state actions, including raids and investigations targeting former public officials like ex-Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison and former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
Gyamfi said it was ironic and troubling that Ayine, who once taught future lawyers to resist the abuse of state power, now presides over a legal environment where such abuses are allegedly taking place unchecked.
“If Ayine is AG today, and the very things he cautioned us against are happening under his watch, then something has gone terribly wrong,” Gyamfi remarked. “He once stood for legal integrity, not political convenience.”
He pointed to a pattern of intimidating legal actions, stressing that while Ayine may not be directly responsible, his position as the government’s chief legal advisor demands accountability, leadership, and the defense of constitutional rights.
Gyamfi’s remarks add to growing concerns among legal observers and civil society groups about the role of the Attorney General in ensuring state power is exercised within the bounds of the law.
