The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has moved swiftly to manage the controversy stirred by its Bono Regional Chairman, Mr. Kwame Baffoe—widely known as Abronye DC—following his recent critical remarks about Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams during a media interview.
In an official statement issued by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party disassociated itself from Abronye DC’s comments, calling them “unfortunate and unprovoked,” and underscoring that they do not represent the party’s values or official viewpoint.
The statement reaffirmed the NPP’s respect for religious leaders and the important role they play in Ghana’s development and societal harmony. It also highlighted the party’s emphasis on exercising freedom of expression responsibly, particularly when addressing revered national figures.
“We recognise Archbishop Duncan-Williams’ significant contributions and the broader influence of religious institutions in promoting peace and moral guidance,” the statement said, urging Ghanaians—especially Christians—not to conflate Abronye DC’s personal opinions with the party’s position.
The swift response comes amid growing public backlash and calls for the NPP to clarify its stance, following social media uproar triggered by Abronye’s statements on Ohia TV.
By distancing itself from Abronye’s remarks, the NPP aims to reaffirm its commitment to maintaining respectful engagement with religious communities, mitigating potential damage to its public image as it seeks to navigate sensitive socio-political dynamics.
