NPP Stages “Democracy Under Attack” Protest in Accra

Thousands of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members and leaders took to the streets of Accra on Thursday for a protest against what they described as threats to Ghana’s democracy.

The demonstration, dubbed “Democracy Under Attack,” drew a large crowd of NPP supporters, who accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of undermining democratic principles and weakening key state institutions.

At the end of the protest, the NPP, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, its General Secretary, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, chief of staff to NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, presented a petition at the forecourt of Jubilee House after earlier submitting a separate petition to the Supreme Court. There were several other senior members and leaders of the NPP who participated in the protest including former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Joe Ghartey, Lawyer Frank Davies, Chairman of NPP’s Constitutional and Legal Team, NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, as well former Minister of Information, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.

According to the party, the protest was intended to draw national attention to what it described as growing threats to democratic governance in Ghana. The NPP alleged political persecution, selective justice, and the misuse of state institutions against political opponents.

In its petition to President John Dramani Mahama, the NPP stated: “Ghana’s decades-long reputation as a beacon of constitutional democracy, public accountability, peace, and political stability on the African continent is being aggressively dismantled under your administration. What we are currently witnessing is not ordinary governance, but a systemic breakdown of constitutional checks and balances, the normalization of executive lawlessness, and the weaponization of state instruments to crush political opposition, suppress media freedoms, and shield government allies from accountability.”

The party said the petition highlighted developments it believes undermine the rule of law, judicial independence, and public confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions.
Among the issues raised was the Court of Appeal’s acquittal and discharge of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Christine Tamakloe Attionu.

The NPP also expressed concern over the removal process involving Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, as well as the 20-year prison sentence imposed on its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Party leaders maintained that the protest was a call for the protection of democratic institutions and constitutional governance in Ghana.
