Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has urged his team to remain focused, emphasizing that Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is far from guaranteed despite their commanding position in Group I.
Following a dominant 3-0 victory over Madagascar, Ghana sits atop the group with 15 points, holding a five-point lead over second-placed Madagascar. However, Comoros has the chance to reduce that gap to three points when they face Chad in their upcoming fixture on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
Speaking at a post-match press conference, Addo stressed that while Ghana’s position is strong, the team cannot afford to lose focus with four more matches to play.
“I think we’re in a good position, but this is also a danger. Now, my concern is keeping our heads focused. The job is really, really not done,” he said.
He cautioned that a potential Comoros victory would bring them within three points of Ghana, underscoring the unpredictability of football.
“If anyone thinks we’re through, then he’s making a big, big mistake. Football has shown us time and again how things can change quickly. We must stay focused.”
When asked about the Black Stars’ recent performances, including back-to-back wins against Chad and Madagascar, Addo remained measured in his assessment.
“I’m very happy with the results and how we played. It was well deserved. But as a national coach, you always have to wait months before you can work with the team again, so we must maintain this momentum when we regroup,” he explained.
Despite the recent successes, Addo reiterated the importance of keeping their eyes on the bigger picture.
“We can’t change the past, but we can shape the future. Right now, our goal is to use our position wisely and make sure we qualify for the World Cup.”
The Black Stars will continue their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in September, facing Chad and Mali. With a crucial stretch of fixtures ahead, Otto Addo and his team remain determined to seal their place at the global showpiece, but they know the battle is far from over.
