With the 2028 general elections on the horizon, supporters of Ghana’s two leading political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), are not only debating who their own parties should field but are also expressing preferences for who they would like their rivals to choose.
Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, revealed that a striking pattern has emerged in recent political sentiment surveys. According to him, many NDC supporters are rooting for the NPP to settle on former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer.
Conversely, NPP supporters appear to favour the idea of the NDC electing either its National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, popularly known as “General Mosquito,” or Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.
“A key phenomenal trend we observed is that the NDC people prefer NPP to elect Bawumia and the NPP people prefer NDC to elect Mosquito or Haruna Iddrisu,” Mr Dankwah explained in an interview with JoyNews on Sunday, September 21.
Analysts suggest that these preferences may be more strategic than genuine admiration, as party supporters may be calculating which opposing candidate would be easier to defeat in a high-stakes presidential contest.
The development adds an intriguing twist to Ghana’s political landscape, as both major parties weigh internal choices while also navigating attempts by rival supporters to influence the debate.
