Health authorities in the Central Region have initiated a formal investigation into the death of a pregnant woman at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital, following widespread public concern over the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Ghana Health Service, through its Central Regional Directorate, announced the formation of a committee to conduct a full review of the case involving Abigail Opoku, who reportedly died on April 26, 2026.
The decision comes after allegations that the deceased was unable to undergo a required caesarean section due to the unavailability of beds in the recovery ward.
In a statement signed by Dr. Alberta Adjebeng Biritwum-Nyarko, the Directorate expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public that the matter is being handled with the utmost seriousness.
The investigative committee draws membership from key institutions, including the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, the Trauma and Specialist Hospital, the Regional Health Directorate, the Regional Coordinating Council, and the Office of the Attorney-General.
It has been tasked to undertake a thorough, objective, and transparent assessment of the incident and submit findings and recommendations for public release.
Authorities have appealed for calm and urged the public to allow due process as the investigation proceeds, reaffirming their commitment to improving patient safety and the quality of maternal healthcare services in the region.
