STMA Pushes Major Infrastructure Drive as 24-Hour Market, Roads, and Waste Projects Advance

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) says it is making steady progress on a wide range of development projects aimed at improving infrastructure, sanitation, and public services across the metropolis, funded through its allocation from the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF).

Mayor Frederick Faustinus Faidoo disclosed that the Assembly received GHS 19.55 million last year, which has been channelled into key sectors including market development, roads, education, health, water, and sanitation.

He said a significant portion of the funds was committed to the government’s 24-hour economy market initiative and legacy infrastructure projects, while additional allocations supported basic social services and administrative functions.

According to him, about 14 development projects are currently ongoing, including the construction of classroom blocks, CHPS compounds, borehole drilling and mechanisation, as well as renovations to Assembly facilities and the Mayor’s residence. He noted that several of these projects, which began in October last year, are at advanced stages, with some already completed and handed over for use.

On social interventions, Mr Faidoo said the Assembly received GHS 143,187.60 for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), which was used to support 21 beneficiaries with livelihood items, while others received assistance for education, healthcare, and small businesses. Two PWD associations also benefited from programme support.

The Mayor highlighted improvements in street lighting, noting that 11 communities including Essikado, Ketan, Chapel Hill, Takoradi Amanful, Beach Road, and New Takoradi have benefited from new installations and repairs.

Waste management remains a major challenge, he said, with the metropolis generating about 168.9 tonnes of solid waste daily. Of this, household waste accounts for 118.7 tonnes, while non-household waste contributes 50.2 tonnes.

Mr Faidoo expressed concern over overflow at communal container sites, attributing it to limited waste vehicles, poor site management, inadequate containers, bad access roads to disposal sites, and indiscriminate dumping by residents and traders.

He said the Assembly plans to strengthen enforcement of sanitation bylaws, intensify public education, and deploy a special environmental sanitation taskforce, supported by CCTV monitoring. Short-term door-to-door waste collection measures are also being considered.

Long-term plans include waste-to-energy initiatives and plastic recycling partnerships, including collaboration with Salifu Plastic Recycling Enterprise and discussions with a Chinese firm, SUS Environment, to develop an integrated waste bio-digester and recycling facility.

On security and livestock control, the Mayor said the Assembly is taking steps to address stray animals and illegal grazing, including registration of cattle owners, public sensitisation, and prosecution of offenders, with 12 herdsmen currently facing legal action.

He also reported progress in disaster preparedness, with NADMO intensifying public education, assessing flood-prone areas, and desilting major drains ahead of the rainy season.

In agriculture, Mr Faidoo said programmes under the Feed Ghana initiative and tree crop development projects are expanding, with thousands of households and groups registered for poultry and seedling distribution, including coconut and oil palm for the 2026 planting season.

On roads, he said major projects under the “Big Push” initiative and Green Cities Infrastructure programme are advancing, including seven key roads being executed by Viabuild Africa NV, which are nearly 93 percent complete. A wider network of 28 roads and drainage systems is also under construction to improve mobility and flood resilience.

The Assembly further plans new transport and market infrastructure, including a bus terminal at Nkroful Junction, redevelopment of the Sekondi Market, a multipurpose car park, and upgrades to lorry stations and haulage terminals across the metropolis.
