The Tema Development Company (TDC) Limited has intensified its crackdown on illegally acquired lands, retrieving a parcel in Tema Community 5 that had been wrongly sold for private benefit.
The land, which was earmarked for the construction of a public toilet facility, had been sold at a token price of GHS 2,000. However, following internal investigations, TDC intervened to secure the plot back into public ownership.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, September 4, TDC Managing Director Courage Makafui Nunekpeku reaffirmed the company’s determination to protect public lands from encroachment and misuse.
“We are not grabbing any land. We are simply restoring what rightfully belongs to the state for the benefit of the people,” Mr. Nunekpeku stated. “That parcel has been retrieved and will now serve its intended purpose as a public toilet facility for the community.”
The move forms part of TDC’s wider mandate to strengthen infrastructure and housing development by reclaiming lands that have been diverted from their intended public use.
Meanwhile, Mr. Nunekpeku also addressed ongoing tensions between the Peaceful Settlers’ Association and the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, noting that TDC is working with stakeholders to ensure disputes over land are resolved without conflict.
“This is about safeguarding community needs, and we will continue to engage all parties to ensure the rule of law and order prevails,” he added.
The company says its recovery campaign is central to ensuring state lands are used for their rightful purpose, helping improve urban development across Tema and beyond.
