The three major pre-tertiary teacher unions are set to meet today, Friday, September 25, to determine their next course of action after government failed to meet a deadline for paying outstanding promotion-related arrears.
The meeting follows the expiration of a September 24 deadline issued by the unions for government to settle salary upgrades and promotion placements owed to teachers.
The Education Minister had earlier committed to resolving the outstanding payments for nearly 80,000 promoted teachers by September.
However, the unions say the deadline has passed without any payment or formal response from government.
Communications Officer of the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana, Kingsley Anyimadu, confirmed that the leadership of the three unions would meet to assess the situation.
“We have not received any response from the government. The leadership of these three teacher unions—that is, the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana, formerly CCT Ghana, NAGRAT, and GNAT—will be meeting early in the morning,” he said.
The meeting is expected to provide the unions with an opportunity to review the government’s failure to meet the commitment and determine how to proceed with their demand for the payment of the outstanding entitlements.
The affected teachers are awaiting salary adjustments and promotion placements arising from their progression in the teaching service.
The unions had set the September 24 deadline as part of efforts to secure a resolution to the long-standing issue.
With the deadline now elapsed, the outcome of Friday’s meeting could determine whether the unions adopt further measures to press government to fulfil its commitment.
The development comes as concerns over delayed promotion-related payments continue to affect teachers who have already qualified for salary upgrades but remain without the corresponding financial adjustments.
