Thailand is mourning the loss of Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati, the eldest child of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who died at the age of 47 after spending nearly four years in a coma.
The royal palace announced that the princess passed away on Thursday evening following complications from a series of health conditions, including an intra-abdominal infection, colitis, low blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias and blood clotting disorders.
Widely known as Princess Pa, she had remained hospitalized since December 2022, when she collapsed due to a heart-related condition while carrying out official duties in Nakhon Ratchasima province. She was subsequently airlifted to Bangkok, where she received intensive medical care.
Beyond her royal status, Princess Bajrakitiyabha earned recognition for her work in law, diplomacy and social advocacy. A graduate of Cornell University with advanced degrees in law, she served as a prosecutor in Thailand’s Office of the Attorney-General and later represented her country as ambassador to Austria, Slovenia and Slovakia.
She was particularly noted for championing the welfare of female prisoners through charitable initiatives aimed at supporting incarcerated women, especially expectant mothers and those with young children.
Her contributions to justice and legal reform gained international recognition in 2017 when she was appointed a goodwill ambassador for the rule of law in Southeast Asia by the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.
In recent years, Princess Bajrakitiyabha also held senior roles within Thailand’s military establishment, attaining the rank of general and serving as chief of staff in the Royal Security Command.
As one of the few members of the royal family formally eligible to succeed to the throne under Thailand’s constitutional framework, her death marks a significant loss for the monarchy.
The royal palace has announced funeral rites in her honour, while the Thai government is expected to observe a period of national mourning as the nation pays tribute to a princess remembered for her dedication to public service, justice and humanitarian causes.
