Three people have lost their lives while 17 others were rescued following a fatal road accident at Woadze near Kpeve on the Kpeve–Asikuma road in the Volta Region.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service at the Peki Fire Station led rescue operations after receiving a distress call at about 9:58 am on Friday, May 22.
According to the GNFS, the crash involved a Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle with registration number GR 8231 C, which was travelling from Abotuase in the Volta Region to Ningo in the Greater Accra Region.
The vehicle was carrying 20 passengers, including men, women and children, when the accident occurred.
Fire officers arriving at the scene found the vehicle badly damaged, with several passengers trapped inside the wreckage.
The rescue team successfully extricated 17 survivors, including four children, from the mangled vehicle.
However, three adults — two men and one woman — were confirmed dead at the scene.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service at the Kpando Divisional Command joined the emergency response operation to assist with rescue and recovery efforts.
Medical teams from the Ghana Ambulance Service also transported the injured victims and the deceased to the Kpando Government Hospital and Peki Government Hospital for treatment and preservation.
Authorities say the injured passengers are currently receiving medical care while investigations into the cause of the accident continue.
