A 26-year-old TikToker accused of making alleged death threats against President John Dramani Mahama has been granted GH¢1 million bail as security agencies intensify efforts to clamp down on dangerous and inciteful content circulating on social media platforms.
The accused, identified by police as Mahama Aminat, popularly known on TikTok as Akosua Serwaa Minat, was arrested by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) after viral videos allegedly containing threatening and derogatory remarks against the President surfaced online.
The court granted her bail with two sureties, one of whom must be a civil servant earning at least GH¢5,000 monthly. She has also been ordered to surrender her passport and Ghana Card to the police and report regularly to investigators pending the outcome of investigations.
Investigators say the videos, which spread rapidly across TikTok and other social media platforms, contained statements perceived as threats to the life of President Mahama and also targeted First Lady Lordina Mahama.
The case has heightened concerns over the growing use of digital platforms to spread inflammatory political content, with security agencies warning that online threats and incitement would be treated as serious national security matters.
Police say the arrest forms part of broader efforts to monitor and curb the misuse of social media platforms for content capable of inciting violence, undermining public safety, or threatening national stability.
The viral videos triggered public outrage and renewed calls for tighter enforcement against individuals who use online platforms to promote hate speech, threats and political extremism.
The case is expected to test how Ghana’s security and judicial systems respond to the rising challenge of digital incitement and politically charged online content in an increasingly polarised social media environment.
