The International Monetary Fund has issued a stark warning about the health of the global economy, slashing its 2025 growth forecast to 2.8%—a sharp drop from its 3.3% projection just three months ago. The downgrade, revealed in the IMF’s April 2025 World Economic Outlook (WEO), is being attributed primarily to the intensifying global trade war triggered by sweeping new U.S. tariffs.
The Fund’s report paints a sobering picture: near-universal tariffs imposed by the United States on April 2 have sent shockwaves through global supply chains, prompted swift retaliation from trading partners, and triggered a surge in economic uncertainty.
“These measures, combined with unpredictable policy shifts, are now acting as a major drag on global growth,” the report noted. “Trade tensions are rising to levels not seen in a century.”
Advanced economies are expected to feel the chill more acutely, with growth now forecast at just 1.4% in 2025. The U.S., which initiated the trade upheaval, will also feel the pinch—its growth is now estimated at 1.8%, down nearly a full percentage point.
Emerging markets aren’t spared either. Countries like China, directly affected by the latest tariffs, face significant downgrades. Growth for this group is projected to fall to 3.7% in 2025.
The report also flags a slower-than-expected decline in inflation, and warns of rising risks including potential financial instability, capital flight from vulnerable economies, and escalating debt stress—particularly in low-income nations.
Despite the gloomy outlook, the IMF offers a potential silver lining: a de-escalation of trade tensions and renewed global cooperation could reverse the downturn.
“Coordinated policy action is crucial to restore trade predictability, address structural vulnerabilities, and revive long-term global prosperity,” the Fund urged.
As global markets brace for more turbulence, the IMF’s message is clear: without urgent and collective action, the world risks sliding further into economic uncertainty and fragmentation.
