A growing chieftaincy dispute has emerged in the Akuapem Traditional Area following opposition by suspended Queen Mother Nana Afua Nketia Obuo II to the planned enstoolment of former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo as the Mmrahene (Legal Chief) of Okuapemman.
The Queen Mother recently issued a public declaration rejecting the appointment, but her position has been strongly challenged by palace insiders, traditional authorities, and family heads who insist the process remains valid under customary law.
At the centre of the dispute is Nana Afua Nketia Obuo II’s current suspension by the Akuapem Traditional Council, which is chaired by Okuapemhene Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III.
Traditional sources argue that her suspension limits her authority to intervene in official stool matters or challenge decisions made by the paramount chief.
Senior chiefs within Okuapemman have also publicly backed Justice Sophia Akuffo’s elevation, describing her appointment as a significant honour for the traditional area.
Among those supporting the enstoolment are key divisional leaders, including Nana Osim Kwatia, Osuodumgya Otutu Ababio V, Otoobour Djan Kwasi II, Osabarima Enyine Asiedu Okoo Ababio III, and Osahene Boafo Ansah III.
Traditional experts have also disputed claims that the Queen Mother has the authority to nominate or reject candidates for such titles, explaining that under Akuapem custom, that responsibility lies with the Abrewatia in consultation with the Abusuapayin.
According to palace sources, the Queen Mother’s role is limited to formally announcing a nominee once the family heads complete the selection process.
Justice Sophia Akuffo’s family has also publicly endorsed her appointment. Her maternal family head, Abusuapayin Asiedu-Ofei, and paternal representatives led by Nana Appiah Anti IV have described her as fit and capable of serving in the role.
They praised her distinguished legal career, which includes serving as Ghana’s second female Chief Justice and as President of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Supporters say her appointment could bring prestige, expertise, and development opportunities to Okuapemman.
With broad backing from traditional leaders, family heads, and the traditional council, observers say the enstoolment process appears set to proceed despite the objections raised by the suspended Queen Mother.
Traditional authorities are now calling for calm and urging residents to allow the matter to be resolved peacefully.
