Across Ghana, tributes continue to pour in for the late Justice Nasiru Sulemana Gbadegbe, whose passing on April 5, 2025, has left a void in the nation’s judicial and civic landscape.
While the Volta Region House of Chiefs mourned the loss of a man they described as a “judicial icon and statesman,” others in the legal and political spheres have also paid homage to his enduring legacy of fairness, integrity, and legal brilliance.
Justice Gbadegbe, who served over three decades on the bench, was revered for his calm demeanor, depth of legal reasoning, and commitment to justice. His judgments were known to be measured and principled, often setting critical precedents in Ghana’s legal system.
Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo described him as “a quiet force in the courtroom” who never sought the limelight but earned the respect of his peers and the confidence of the public. “He stood tall among us—not just in height, but in wisdom and moral clarity,” she added.
President John Dramani Mahama also released a statement expressing his condolences to the Gbadegbe family, praising the late judge’s role in strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring justice during some of the most pivotal legal moments in Ghana’s recent history, including the landmark 2012/2013 election petition.
Law students and young lawyers have taken to social media to share how Justice Gbadegbe inspired them, with many citing his well-known dissenting opinions and lectures as formative to their understanding of justice and equity.
As preparations begin for his final funeral rites, the Ghana Bar Association has announced plans to hold a commemorative symposium in his honor. The event, set to take place at the Ghana School of Law, will reflect on his judicial contributions and his impact on legal education.
Meanwhile, the Volta Region House of Chiefs has announced that it will hold a special traditional tribute event to honor his memory and highlight his contributions to the region and the nation.
Justice Gbadegbe is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
