Two midwives at the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga have been remanded into police custody by the Tamale Circuit Court as investigations deepen into the alleged disappearance of a newborn from the health facility.
The accused, Frank Atanga, 52, and Mariam Mohammed, 32, were arraigned before Her Honour Afua Srakuba on charges of conspiracy to steal and abduction. Both have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court ordered that they remain in police custody for one week, with the case adjourned to June 18, 2026, for further proceedings.
The decision follows ongoing police investigations into the reported missing baby, who is said to have disappeared from the hospital on June 10, 2026, triggering concerns and an internal search within the facility that so far has not yielded results.
The Savannah Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed the incident, describing it as distressing and regrettable. According to the Directorate, hospital authorities immediately conducted a search after the disappearance was reported, but the newborn could not be found.
Regional Health Director, Dr. John Ekow Otoo, said the Directorate is collaborating with hospital management, security agencies, and the Ghana Police Service to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and locate the missing child.
He assured that efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe return of the baby and expressed sympathy to the affected family during what he described as a deeply painful situation.
The GHS has also appealed to the public to assist with any information that could help trace the newborn, urging individuals to report to the nearest police station, health facility, or regional health authorities.
Authorities have assured that all information provided will be handled with strict confidentiality as investigations continue.
