A Bolgatanga Circuit Court has remanded two watchmen accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old student of Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School (BOGISS).
The accused persons, Adams Nyaaba Iddrisu, 72, and Elvis Adongo, 38, appeared before the court on Thursday, August 20, 2026, in connection with the alleged assault of the student, who is reported to have autism.
Presided over by His Honour Sumaila Mbache Ahmadu, the court did not take the pleas of the accused and remanded them to reappear on September 2, 2026.
The first accused was represented by counsel Richard Adazabra, while the second accused appeared without legal representation. Inspector Baliki Amidu Issaka is prosecuting the case.
The development follows strong condemnation from the Ministry of Education, which described the alleged abuse as a serious breach of trust and an unacceptable violation of the rights and safety of a child under the care of the school.
The ministry said it was deeply disturbed by the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety, dignity and protection of children within Ghana’s education system.
It stressed that schools had a responsibility to provide safe environments where students could learn and develop without fear of abuse or exploitation.
“We condemn in the strongest terms any act of sexual abuse or exploitation of a child under our care. Schools exist to protect and nurture students, and any breach of that trust, particularly by adults entrusted with safeguarding vulnerable children, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” the Ministry said in a statement issued on Thursday.
The Ghana Education Service has since interdicted the two security personnel and called for a thorough investigation into the allegations.
The Ministry of Education also emphasised that the victim must not be blamed for the alleged abuse, stating that a minor could not be held responsible for sexual abuse perpetrated against her by an adult.
The ministry said it would continue to support measures aimed at protecting vulnerable students and ensuring that allegations of abuse within educational institutions were properly investigated and dealt with in accordance with the law.
