The University of Ghana has taken disciplinary action against Dr. Sampson Obed Appiah, a senior lecturer in the Sociology Department, suspending him for two semesters after finding him guilty of sexual harassment.
A statement issued by the university’s Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, on March 12, 2025, confirmed that Dr. Appiah’s conduct violated Section 1.1(A) of the Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy, as well as Section 10.0 of the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff.
As part of the sanctions, he is required to issue a formal written apology to the complainant and is prohibited from seeking promotion for a year after completing his suspension. Additionally, he must undergo mandatory training on sexual harassment and misconduct, organized by the university’s Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee.
Dr. Appiah was among 17 individuals penalized by the university, including 16 students who faced disciplinary action for various forms of misconduct.
The university reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful academic environment and urged all members of the institution to adhere to established policies and ethical standards.
