Upper East Airport: A 40-Year-Old Promise Reignited Amidst Public Skepticism

The renewed government push for the construction of an airport in the Upper East Region has sparked mixed reactions among residents, many of whom remain skeptical after decades of unfulfilled promises.

Despite the latest commitment from President John Dramani Mahama and the Regional Minister, Mr. Donatus Atanga Akamugri, locals question whether this long-anticipated project will finally materialize.

The proposal for an Upper East Regional Airport dates back to the late 1970s and early 1980s, when approximately 2,888.72 hectares of land was earmarked at Anateem in Sumbrungu for the project. However, despite multiple technical evaluations, feasibility studies, and campaign pledges, the initiative has never progressed beyond paper.

Residents recall similar promises made by past governments, only to see plans stall after elections. Mr. Thomas Abugri, a retired educationist in Bolgatanga, voiced the sentiments of many: “We’ve heard this for decades. Each election cycle, politicians resurrect this airport promise, but nothing happens. We need action, not more words.”

With the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) now actively involved in site assessment, there are signs of renewed efforts to secure funding and advance the project. Proponents argue that an airport would enhance security, boost mining operations, and facilitate economic growth by attracting investors.

Regional Minister Mr. Akamugri reaffirmed that the airport would serve not just Northern Ghana but also Burkina Faso and Togo, transforming Bolgatanga into a commercial hub. However, many residents insist they will only believe in the project when they see actual construction begin.

Civil society groups and community leaders are urging the government to be transparent about funding sources and a clear timeline for execution. Mr. Bismark Asampana, a youth activist, challenged authorities: “What is different this time? We need full disclosure on funding, construction plans, and deadlines. The people of Upper East deserve better than empty rhetoric.”

As the government reaffirms its commitment, the people of Upper East remain cautiously optimistic, watching closely to see if this decades-old promise will finally take flight—or remain grounded in political history.
