The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has issued a firm ultimatum to government, demanding that outstanding conditions of service for lecturers in public universities be resolved by 30 June 2026 or face possible industrial action.
The decision was taken at a National Executive Council meeting held in Ho on 18 June, where the association expressed growing frustration over delays affecting key aspects of members’ welfare.
UTAG raised concerns over several unresolved issues, including the interim salary adjustment agreement, unpaid allowances, promotion arrears, and delays in the payment of the 2026 Book and Research Allowance.
The association also highlighted challenges affecting post-retirement contract renewals as well as delays in staff regularisation processes across public universities.
In a statement, UTAG stressed the urgency of government action, insisting that agreed conditions of service must be implemented without further delay.
“Government must sign and implement the interim salary adjustment agreement and address all outstanding issues,” the association said.
It further demanded the immediate payment of all arrears and allowances owed to affected staff, warning that continued delays were unacceptable.
UTAG cautioned that failure to meet the deadline would trigger internal consultations with members to determine the next course of action, including possible industrial measures.
“If there is no resolution by 30 June, we will begin consultations with members for appropriate action,” the statement added.
The warning adds pressure on government to urgently engage with university teachers as tensions grow over conditions of service in the public tertiary education sector.
