Questions over construction safety have emerged after sections of an apartment building under construction at Villaggio in Accra’s Airport Residential Area collapsed during strong winds on Wednesday, October 21.
The incident occurred around midday as heavy winds swept through parts of the capital ahead of rainfall, sending portions of the structure and construction materials falling from the upper floors.
The collapse caused panic among residents and passers-by in the area, with footage circulating on social media showing sections of the building breaking away and debris dropping from the structure.
A video shared by SIKAOFFICIAL on X captured scenes from the site following the incident. The footage was credited to Efo Kodjo.
The affected structure forms part of a new apartment development at Villaggio that is currently under construction.
The circumstances surrounding the collapse remain unclear, including whether the strong winds alone caused the damage or whether other factors contributed to the failure of the affected sections.
There was also no immediate official information on the extent of the damage or whether anyone had been injured.
The incident raises questions about the safety of buildings under construction during severe weather conditions and the measures in place to protect workers, residents and members of the public around construction sites.
Further information is expected to clarify the cause of the collapse and whether the affected structure will undergo a technical safety assessment.
