Questions over the accountability of public funds used to evacuate hundreds of Ghanaians from South Africa have emerged following a JoyNews Research investigation into payment records submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The investigation has identified apparent forged signatures and inconsistencies in the Ministry’s financial records, raising concerns about whether the documents accurately account for expenditure incurred during the government-funded evacuation exercise.
The evacuation was undertaken to facilitate the return of Ghanaians who needed assistance to come home from South Africa. However, discrepancies identified in the records have triggered questions about how the funds were disbursed, who received the payments and whether the supporting documentation can be relied upon.
The findings also raise concerns about how documents bearing questionable signatures became part of the records used to account for the operation.
As calls for transparency and accountability grow, JoyNews is examining the documents and tracing the inconsistencies to establish the extent of the discrepancies and the questions they raise about the use of public funds.
The investigation seeks to determine whether the submitted records provide an accurate account of the expenditure and who may be responsible for the discrepancies identified.
