Tension is mounting in Weta as traditional authorities and residents intensify calls for justice following the shocking disappearance of the remains of a late chief after burial.
The incident, which has unsettled the entire traditional area, has prompted the Weta Traditional Council to take both spiritual and civic action, including the performance of pacification rites to cleanse the land and seek ancestral intervention.
The late Fiator, Godfred Kwabla Kporyito Glago, popularly known as Sokpey Gatsi, was buried on March 14, 2026, following funeral rites at Klikor. However, less than 24 hours later, his grave at the Ashiakpor Royal Family Mausoleum was allegedly desecrated, with the coffin broken and the body removed by unknown individuals.
With the remains still missing, traditional leaders have expressed frustration over what they describe as a slow and unclear response from law enforcement. Paramount Chief Torgbui Akpo Ashiakpor VI questioned the handling of the case, alleging that suspects initially arrested had been released under unclear circumstances.
He warned that failure by authorities to act decisively could undermine public confidence in the justice system, insisting that the matter would be pursued until those responsible are held accountable.
The incident has also revived memories of a similar grave desecration in 2020, which the Council says was not conclusively resolved—raising concerns that past failures may have emboldened perpetrators.
Amid rising tension, traditional leaders, fetish priests, and community members have united to perform rituals across key locations, including the graveside and community grounds, to restore spiritual balance and invoke ancestral justice.
Hunua Sariki Alordorlawonyor, Chairman of Fetish Priests in the area, rejected any association with the act, emphasising that their role is rooted in healing and protection, not desecration.
Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant and support efforts to uncover those behind the act, as the community seeks both justice and the restoration of cultural dignity.
The disturbing development has not only shaken Weta but also sparked broader concerns about the protection of traditional customs and the sanctity of burial rites in Ghana.
