A trader, Constance Gyasi Nimako, is in police custody after an Accra Circuit Court remanded her for allegedly spending a staggering GH¢770,500 that was mistakenly wired into her Ecobank account.
Nimako, popularly known as Maa Adwoa, reportedly moved swiftly after receiving the unexpected windfall, transferring large sums to other bank accounts and withdrawing part in cash before efforts could be made to retrieve the money.
According to court documents, Nimako transferred GH¢300,000 to her mother’s Fidelity Bank account, moved another GH¢400,000 into her personal GCB Bank account, and withdrew GH¢70,500 in cash—leaving just under GH¢30,000 in the original account.
She is facing charges of stealing and money laundering, while her mother, Cecilia Gyasi, has been charged with abetment of crime. Both pleaded not guilty. While the court granted bail to Gyasi in the amount of GH¢500,000 with two sureties, Nimako was remanded due to the serious nature of the charges and concerns over her availability for trial.
The case, which has drawn public interest, stems from a clerical error on February 4, 2025, when the CEO of a private company accidentally instructed Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) to transfer GH¢800,000 to Nimako’s Ecobank account, instead of his own. The mistake was only discovered days later, but by then most of the money had vanished.
CBG and Ecobank’s efforts to recall the funds were unsuccessful. Investigations revealed that Nimako ignored multiple requests to return the money and even insulted police officers when contacted. She was eventually apprehended in Kumasi, while her mother was picked up in Accra.
Nimako reportedly told investigators the money came from a foreign company she had no prior relationship with and claimed to have used the funds to order goods.
Police say investigations are ongoing to trace the flow of the remaining funds. The case resumes on July 7, 2025.
