Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—has issued a passionate call for unity within the party, urging delegates to put internal divisions behind them and rally behind flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP prepares for the 2026 general elections.
Addressing party supporters, Chairman Wontumi admitted that internal discontent, rather than leadership failure, played a key role in the party’s defeat in the 2024 polls.
“We couldn’t even campaign in some areas because the people were upset with us,” he acknowledged, pointing to factional disputes and unresolved grievances as obstacles that hindered the party’s performance.
Drawing historical parallels, Wontumi likened the current moment to the late 1990s, when the NPP faced similar challenges but managed to regroup and win power. He reminded delegates that the party’s past victories were built on loyalty and consistency.
“Just like in 1998 when the same delegates who voted in 1996 came back stronger, we are seeing history repeat itself,” he said. “The delegates who supported Bawumia in 2023 will be the ones voting again in 2026.”
He described the re-use of the party’s voters’ album as symbolic of continuity and divine alignment, adding that it’s a sign of destiny for Bawumia’s leadership.
“Even nature is supporting Bawumia,” Wontumi claimed. “Let’s seize this moment. Let’s vote for Dr. Bawumia and unite the party for victory.”
He further noted that structural reforms within the party have now empowered former executives with voting rights—another move he believes strengthens Bawumia’s position and broadens the base of internal support.
Chairman Wontumi’s remarks reflect growing calls within the NPP to close ranks and focus on a unified front as the party prepares to contest the next general election.
